The establishment of The Ezra Taft Benson Food and Agriculture Institute at BYU was announced at a program on Sept. 23, 1975, by the university's president, Dallin H. Oaks, according to the Sept. 27, 1975, Church News.
The purpose of the new institute would be to contribute to increased food production and more efficient food distribution throughout the world through research and other activities, the article stated. The institute was named for President Ezra Taft Benson, then president of the Quorum of the Twelve and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The institute was based at the 700-acre BYU Farm in Spanish Fork, Utah, a few miles south of Provo.
