TOKYO, Japan Members of the North Tokyo Stake, under the
direction of stake Relief Society president Chizuru Inoue, donated 388
telephone credit cards for displaced children here Oct. 11.
Two months ago on Miyakejima, a small island off the coast of Tokyo, a large earthquake and volcanic eruptions occurred. All those living on the island had to leave their homes and belongings and find temporary housing near Tokyo. Among the 4,000 evacuees were about 400 school-age children.
The children are now in school and have found suitable housing. However, many have been separated from their parents and other family members. Their biggest need has been communication with their families.
Because local calls are charged by the minute, telephone calls in Japan are very expensive. Each credit card donated by the members of the Tokyo North Stake will pay for about $10 worth of phone calls.
Sister Inoue, accompanied by other Church members, presented the telephone cards to Otohiko Hori of the Japan Red Cross Association, who will give them to the children of Miyakejima.
At the same time members of the Asia North Area Presidency donated $10,000 to the Red Cross to help the Miyakejima refugees to become resettled when they return to their homes.
