LAIE, Hawaii — A crowd of community members, students and faculty gathered on Oct. 14 to witness the historic groundbreaking ceremony of the first BYU-Hawaii stake center. The long-awaited stake center facilities will include two chapels, two kitchens, one baptismal font, 14 offices for bishops, approximately 28 teaching stations and one multipurpose room. The site is located between Temple View Apartments and the Joseph F. Smith Library.
"This is a holy project on hallowed ground, for hallowed reasons," BYU-Hawaii President Eric Shumway said. BYU-Hawaii 1st Stake President James Smith and BYU-Hawaii 2nd Stake President Norm Evans joined President Shumway in the historic groundbreaking process.
Also present at the groundbreaking was George Parkhurst, head of Church facilities on the island of Oahu. He and other leaders emphasized the importance of respecting the upcoming stake center for its divine purposes. "This building will look like it belongs to the Savior. We must keep it that way," Brother Parkhurst said.
Construction should be completed on the new building within 18 months.
