Concluding the cornerstone service for the new Nauvoo Illinois Temple on Nov. 5, President Gordon B. Hinckley brought the proceedings into doctrinal focus by invoking the words of the apostle Paul:
"Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
"And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
"In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord." (Ephesians 2:19-21.)
President Hinckley commented: "I would hope that every time you pass
that cornerstone [of the new temple] you will think of Him whom it
represents, Him whom it symbolizes, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the
foundation of this work. And upon that foundation rests the structure of
apostles and prophets, the priesthood of God, with all of the authority
inherent therein. And the building of the temple on top of that, all fitly
framed together. What tremendous significance there is in that statement.
And that stone there, as I've indicated, is designed to symbolize Him as
the central figure of our faith and the Son of God whose name this Church
carries."
