Leaders of the Church decided to open a mission in Japan, according to the Feb. 14, 1901, Deseret Evening News.
The newspaper reported: "A matter of much importance to the people of Utah, particularly to the Latter-day Saints, received consideration at a meeting of President [Lorenzo] Snow and the Twelve Apostles held today. It was nothing less than the advisability of opening a mission in Japan. After mature deliberation it was unanimously decided that the mission be opened and that Apostle Heber J. Grant should undertake the important task."
The article stated that it wasn't known exactly when the mission would begin, but it would be within a few months.
