President George Q. Cannon, after decades of faithful Church service, including serving as a counselor to four Church presidents, died on April 12, 1901, in Monterey, Calif., at the age of 74.

He had traveled from Salt Lake City to California in March to see if a change of climate would help him battle illness which he had suffered for some time, according to Andrew Jenson's Latter-Day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia (p. 51).

President Cannon, who was born in England, was ordained an apostle on Aug. 26, 1860. He later served as a counselor to presidents Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff and Lorenzo Snow.
