CAMPINAS, Brazil Campinas Mayor Antonio da Costa Santos, an architect and historian by profession, toured the construction site of the Campinas Brazil Temple March 22 and told Church leaders he was impressed by the quality of workmanship.
Mayor Santos was hosted by Elder Flavio Cooper, Area Authority Seventy, and members of the Campinas Public Affairs Multistake Council. The mayor was invited and accompanied by Bishop Luis Yabiku, a bishop in the Chapado Ward of the Brazil Campinas Castelo Stake.
Mayor Santos said he was impressed by the good taste shown in the choice of items and attention to detail in the building. After receiving an overview on the importance and sacred purpose of temples, Mayor Santos said he felt honored to visit the site.
On this occasion, he received a copy of the book Our Legacy and a copy of the Book of Mormon, both offered by Elder Cooper. Mayor Toninho, as he is affectionately known in the city, expressed interest in reading the Book of Mormon.
At the end of the visit, the multistake council discussed several humanitarian service projects to be completed, and humanitarian help to be provided this year in the Campinas area.
The mayor supported the projects and offered the resources of city departments to assist the Church service efforts. He also expressed his interest in being present during the projects, so he could work side by side with Church members and the community to improve the city.
