The first stake in the state of Joseph Smith's birth was organized by Elder Boyd K. Packer on April 11, 1976, according to the April 24, 1976, Church News.
The Montpelier Vermont Stake was formed from the Massachusetts Boston Mission with six wards — including one in New Hampshire and one in New York — and two branches.
The Church News reported: "The state of Vermont is the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith, who was born at Sharon in Windsor County Dec. 23, 1805. Many other prominent Church leaders including Brigham Young, Oliver Cowdery, Heber C. Kimball and Erastus Snow were natives of Vermont."
It continued: "Elder Jared Carter first introduced the gospel into Vermont in 1831. He organized the first branch at Benson, Vt., that year.
