And it came to pass that the Lamanites did hunt the band of robbers of Gadianton; and they did preach the word of God among the more wicked part of them, insomuch that this band of robbers was utterly destroyed from among the Lamanites.

— Helaman 6:37

As a result of living and working in a dozen countries, as well as reading about and visiting numerous others, I have become convinced there are secret combinations or organizations in virtually every nation in the world. This greatly distressed me, primarily because it seemed there was little I could do to combat the evil influences exerted upon society by these secret organizations. Then, while studying the Book of Mormon, I found the answer to my dilemma in Helaman.

Similar to our day, the people during Book of Mormon times also were beset by the insidious influences of secret combinations. However, as recorded by Helaman during the reign of the judges, the Lamanites were able to effectively combat and destroy these wicked organizations by preaching "the word of God among the more wicked part of them." Thus, the most effective way to rid our society of such evil influences is simply for us to preach the gospel and be good missionaries. It is no wonder that our Church leaders continually emphasize the importance of missionary work.

Partially as a result of how the message in Helaman influenced me, my wife and I served as missionaries in the Mexico Merida Mission and presently are serving as stake missionaries. — J. Juan Spillett, Rockland, Idaho.
