The inserts for the new scriptures added to the Pearl of Great Price were made available to Church members at Deseret Book stores and dealers, according to the May 15, 1976, Church News. Published under authority of the First Presidency, the inserts contained the Vision of the Celestial Kingdom received by Joseph Smith Jan. 21, 1836, in the Kirtland Temple and the Vision of the Redemption of the Dead given by Joseph F. Smith in Salt Lake City Oct. 3, 1918. The additions to the Pearl of Great Price were approved during the general conference on April 3, 1976.

The inserts were printed in three sizes to fit the pocket, standard and large-print editions of the scriptures. The inserts were printed in verse form, although cross-references and an index were not yet included except for references to 1 Peter in the New Testament.
