SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The Church's participation in the Feria Del Libro (book fair) — a cultural event that emphasizes books, reading and literacy and is attended by more than 2 million people in this Caribbean island nation— has promoted greater understanding of the Church and provided references for missionaries.

Participation by Church members in the Feria Del Libro book fair has promoted understanding and provided referrals for missionaries in Dominican Republic.

For the fair, held April 23-May 6, the Church rented property and constructed a small building to house Church exhibits. Pictures and word strips illustrated Church doctrine and beliefs, beginning with the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The exhibit also included a display highlighting the family.

More than 215 Church members from seven stakes and one district in the greater Santo Domingo area distributed commemorative bookmarks, which included a picture of Christ and a drawing of the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple, and brochures on Church doctrines concerning the family and the temple.

Almost 28,000 people attended the Church booth during the event; 3,117 asked to learn more about the Church.

One woman who entered the Church booth — and who had attended the open house of the Santo Domingo temple last year — was so interested in the Church's teachings regarding the temple that she insisted on meeting with the missionaries immediately. Another visitor overheard the woman's questions and also wanted to learn more about the Church.

"The Feria del Libro is the best attended cultural event in the Dominican Republic," said Lorin N. Pace, who is serving a mission in the country with his wife, Marylynn. "We feel that it represents a golden opportunity once a year to acquaint a very large number of people with the Church."
