WARSAW, Poland What is believed to be the largest gathering of Polish members of the Church in the 11-year history of the Poland Warsaw Mission transpired June 23-24 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Warsaw.
The Poland Warsaw Mission Conference included members from all 17 branches and four out of five groups. Elder D. Lee Tobler of the Seventy and president of the Europe Central Area presided over the conference and spoke in the four meetings.
It was the first opportunity for members and friends to meet since the last conference in 1997.
The conference opened with a priesthood meeting attended by 100 priesthood holders. The second session included auxiliary leaders. Prior to the general session on June 24, a meeting for 60 new members who had joined during the past year was held. Several were invited to describe the kind of welcome they received and how they felt about being members. They told of their callings and how their lives had changed.
A congregation of 500 people attended the general session including Polish dignitaries, representatives of the media, members, missionaries and investigators.
A combined member-missionary choir from the Warsaw and Lodz branches provided music for the general session. After encouraging members to be more involved in missionary efforts, Elder Tobler said the Church throughout Europe will grow more rapidly as members more joyfully share their happiness for the gospel with their friends and relatives.
The conference proved to be a time of rejoicing for members and missionaries as they renewed friendships. One television reporter remarked that "everyone seemed to be very happy to see each other and to be members of the Church."
