The Church actively participated as the United States celebrated its bicentennial in early July 1976, according to the July 10, 1976, Church News.
The highlight was an 11-concert tour of the eastern United States by the Tabernacle Choir. A Church News article stated: "The choir appeared in four of the nation's most historic cities Philadelphia, Pa.; Boston, Mass.; New York City, N.Y.; and Washington, D.C. helping to produce a celebration unmatched in the history of America."
President Spencer W. Kimball spoke and the choir performed at an Independence Day devotional attended by 23,000 in the Capitol Centre, a sports arena in Landover, Md.
The Church News also noted that President Kimball, while in the nation's capital, met with U.S. President Gerald R. Ford and dedicated the new Washington Temple Visitors Center.
