Church leaders will rededicate Welfare Square Sept. 5 following a substantial reconstruction project.

The dedication is part of the Church's ongoing practice to rededicate renovated buildings. Welfare Square is located near downtown Salt Lake City and is perhaps best known for its white, 178-foot grain elevator.

The elevator is actually the sole surviving structure of the original Welfare Square that was built in the midst of the Great Depression.

The newly renovated Welfare Square includes and new cannery, milk-processing plant and bakery. Other facilities have been remodeled or refinished. The renovation project makes the square better suited to serve people and allow them to help themselves.

As always, most of the food products processed and stored at Welfare Square come from Church-owned farms, ranches and orchards. Church employees manage these operations and volunteers do the majority of the work, such as milking cows and picking apples.
