YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia Members of the Church here celebrated Indonesia's Independence Day Aug. 17 with a pioneer day celebration LDS style. "We even had a pioneer day parade around a big city block," wrote Sister LaRee Hammer in correspondence to the Church News.
Sister Hammer, who is serving with her husband, Elder Gary Hammer, as humanitarian missionaries, continued: "We had taught the sisters how to make sunbonnets during Relief Society homemaking meeting, so every sister wore her sunbonnet. We made bandana neckerchiefs for the men to wear. Our Indonesian Brigham Young looked great with his beard and knee boots carrying the Indonesian flag. There were about 20 'becaks,' or tricycle cabs, along with a few motorcycles, a couple of bicycles, and some young people walking. We made quite a sight and the people along the street were full of smiles as they stopped and waved. We also had games, showed the video, Legacy, had food, and danced the Virginia Reel. It was a full, fun day."
