Four international performing artists will share the stage with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee has announced. Frederica von Stade, the king'singers (of Cambridge, England), Evelyn Glennie and Richard Stoltzman will perform in the Tabernacle with the Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square as part of the Olympic Arts Festival.
Tickets to the concerts are free and will be available beginning Saturday, Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. in the Abravanel Hall lobby, 123 West South Temple, Salt Lake City, or by telephoning (888) 451-2787. Only four tickets total will be available per requesting adult. After noon on Sept. 8, remaining tickets will be available at the Abravanel Hall box office.
"These extraordinary performers, in tandem with the world's best known choir, will create one of Salt Lake City's most memorable music experiences," said Raymond T. Grant, artistic director of the 2002 Cultural Olympiad. "These concerts are a musical gift to the world."
Craig D. Jessop, music director of the Tabernacle Choir, said, "What a magnificent opportunity for the choir to perform with these great soloists as Utah welcomes the world."
The schedule of the concerts is as follows:
Feb. 9, 2002, 7:30 p.m. Frederica von Stade is one of the world's most admired opera stars. Since her 1970 Metropolitan Opera debut, she has sung most of the great roles there and at the San Francisco Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and other leading theaters. Her numerous recordings have earned her six Grammy nominations and two Grand Prix du Disc awards.
Feb. 16, 2002, 7:30 p.m. Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman crosses musical genres as a classical and jazz performer. He has appeared as a guest soloist with more than 100 orchestras and received two Grammy Awards.
Feb. 23, 2002, 7:30 p.m. The king'singers is comprised of six English male vocalists and is one of the most sought-after a cappella ensembles in the world. The king'singers have numerous recordings and appear in the United States with major symphonies.
March 9, 2002, 7:30 p.m. Evelyn Glennie is one of the top concert soloists and the only full-time solo classical percussionist in the world. Performing on a wide array of instruments, she has recorded 13 solo albums.
