Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
Philippians 4:8-9
I sat rereading and pondering the notes that I had taken during conference. I was searching for direction for myself and my family. We have tried our best to follow the council of the brethren, and have been blessed in our efforts. I had been struck by how often peace, hope, and family had been spoken of during each session. "How can we change? What more is needed?"
I found in my notes a scripture reference that I had jotted down during President Thomas S. Monson's talk and felt impressed to open my scriptures. I turned to Philippians and began to read. It wasn't until I read the last line of verse 8 that the Spirit caused me to sit up and take notice: " . . . think on these things." It struck me quite forcibly that, as the heart of our home, the state of my thoughts can and does affect the state and spirit of my home. It is my thoughts and, consequently, my attitude, words and, ultimately, my example that either bar or allow the spirit of peace to enter here. If I desire my home to be a sanctuary of peace for my family in this turbulent world, then I must deliberately choose to fill my mind with truth, honesty, whatever is just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtuous.
It is not enough to just keep evil and filthiness out, you must fill your mind, and thus your home with virtue and goodness.
I am so grateful for my Heavenly Father and all His servants. They work so hard to bring us to the peace in Christ if we will choose to seek for it.
