ORLANDO, Fla. BYU running back Luke Staley won the Doak Walker Award, which is presented to the nation's outstanding running back, at ESPN's college football awards show Dec. 6. He was also named AP All-American running back.
In 11 games, Staley a 6-foot-1, 218-pound junior carried 196 times for 1,582 yards and a national-best 24 touchdowns. Staley's 143 yards per game were third in Division I-A. He missed two games New Mexico because of an eligibility question and the Hawaii game after he broke his leg late in the Mississippi State game the previous week. There is a chance he will be able to play in the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve when BYU takes on the Louisville Cardinals.
