The last major detail facing organizers of the Church's Light of the World production is arranging for volunteer hosts who will dress in native costumes and greet visitors as they enter the Conference Center during the Olympics in February.

"We're looking for members in good standing who, preferably, are native of other countries but now live along the Wasatch Front," said Candida Nichols, associate costume designer. "As visitors enter one of the 16 lobbies in the Conference Center, they will be greeted by members of the Church representing the many nations of the world.

"This is to be a festive time, a celebration of cultures when hosts can mingle with visitors and set a mood of friendliness prior to viewing the Light of the World production."

A variety of native musical groups and dancers will also perform as they drift around the lobbies, filling the building with the flavor and ambiance of many cultures.

"We're looking for hosts who are amiable and can speak fluently," said Sister Nichols. "They will not be required to seat the visitors in the auditorium, but be a friend to our foreign guests."

Approximately 60 volunteer hosts are needed. They will be required to attend the 14 performances given between Feb. 1-23. They will welcome visitors for approximately two hours before each performance and play a simple role in the opening act of the production. Hosts need to be 18-90 years old. Returned missionaries who also resemble their foreign culture are encouraged to apply.

It is hoped that hosts will have native costumes they can wear. "We would like to have all ages," said Sister Nichols. "Visitors will see that the Church is worldwide and all ages." Hosts are not asked to do missionary work, but visitors may ask questions about the Church.

In addition to volunteer hosts, several additional native music groups are needed, particularly a Celtic harp player, a Paraguayan harp player and a Balalaika player from Russia. Others who perform music of their native cultures are encouraged to contact Sister Nichols.

Interested participants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Simply contact Candida Nichols or Betzy Distelhorst at: (801) 240-7506 or 1 (800) 453-3860 for a short application. E-mail contact at: avd-2002host@ldschurch.org .
