The Olympics are almost like comfort food, said David Neal, NBC Olympics' executive vice president while in Salt Lake City preparing network coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
"That's something all of us are looking for right now. We're looking to be reassured," he said.
As director of NBC coverage, which will be viewed by billions around the world, Mr. Neal said the aim of their coverage was fun, not fear.
"We want to focus on what we think is going to be a really terrific, joyous two weeks in Salt Lake."
NBC polls found that after Sept. 11, the Olympics have become more important to the nation. "Americans take great pride in hosting the world and in the notion of a peaceful global gathering," he said.
An interview with President Gordon B. Hinckley by NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw will air during the Olympics.
