President Gordon B. Hinckley and his counselors in the First Presidency, President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust, released the following statement Feb. 25 regarding the recently concluded Olympic Winter Games:

"We congratulate the citizens of Salt Lake City and all those throughout the state of Utah and elsewhere who have contributed to the success of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

"Comments from visitors, athletes and news media have praised Utah's communities, volunteers, citizens and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. We add our compliments to SLOC President Mitt Romney, his outstanding staff and volunteers, and all who have participated, supported the events, provided security services, or simply acted as good hosts to people from many nations.

"These Olympic contests have demonstrated the excellence of the human spirit. We are grateful for the determination for each competitor, as well as the resolve of nations to sustain peace during a time of worldwide tensions.

"The Church is thankful, too, for news reports and broadcasts in many countries, the majority of which have been complimentary to the efforts of all Utahns."
