Salt Lake City and an army of Olympic volunteers are finding their second wind, welcoming the world once again this time for the 2002 Winter Paralympics.
The world's premier athletes with physical disabilities gathered in Salt Lake City on March 7 for almost two weeks of winter sports competition.
Some 1,000 athletes and team officials from 36 countries will participate in the eighth World Paralympics, competing in alpine and Nordic skiing events along with a sledge hockey tournament.
Almost 50,000 spectators were expected to gather for the Paralympics' opening ceremonies March 7 at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium. (Because of press deadlines, the Church News will report on the opening ceremonies and other Paralympic events in the issue of March 16.)
Athletes are vyingfor medals at many of the same sports venues used during the 2002 Winter Games. At least two Church members, Keith Barney and Lacey Heward, are competing. He is a member of Team USA in biathlon and cross country events, while teammate Lacey Heward is an alpine skier.
As with the Olympics, thousands of volunteers have been enlisted to help with transportation, parking, media assistance and other duties required to stage the global event.
Closing ceremonies are scheduled for March 16 at the Olympics Medal Plaza in downtown Salt Lake City near Temple Square.
