PROVO, Utah — Former BYU coach LaVell Edwards always said he wanted to serve a Church mission after he finished coaching football. He's finally getting the chance.

The 71-year-old former coach learned Friday that he and his wife, Patti, will serve an 18-month mission in New York City, starting in May. They expect to work in public affairs, which might include welcoming foreign dignitaries and other visitors to the Church's Manhattan offices. "We've been looking forward to it, so we're excited," said Brother Edwards.
