A day after dedicating Mexico's 12th temple, President Gordon B. Hinckley met with the nation's president, Vicente Fox.
President Hinckley along with Elder Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve and other Church and government leaders visited President Fox on April 29 at his Los Pios residence in Mexico City. President Hinckley had spent the day before presiding over dedication ceremonies at the Monterrey Mexico Temple.
During their 30-minute meeting, President Hinckley and the Mexican leader discussed the Church's effort to improve the lives of Mexican members and others alike.
"Lifting the people out of poverty is one of the great challenges of this world," President Hinckley said. "As people become educated, they lift themselves."
President Hinckley explained the Church's Perpetual Education Fund to President Fox. The program caught the attention of the tall, first-term president, who asked several questions about the Church and its activities in Mexico. President Hinckley also discussed an instructional welding program funded by the Church at the Technological University of Santa Catarina in Monterrey, Mexico.
President Hinckley presented President Fox with a donation from the Church Humanitarian Fund earmarked for "Vamos Mexico," a charitable organization championed by Mexican First Lady Marta Sahagun de Fox. "Vamos Mexico" serves poor children and other disadvantaged people in the Latin American country.
The Church leader also expressed appreciation to the Mexican government for allowing missionary work and other Church programs to function freely.
"You are welcome," President Fox said. "We are convinced of [the importance of] total acceptance of all churches."
