RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh North Carolina Stake members participated in a pre-Memorial Day service project in several cemeteries throughout the stake's boundaries.
In the town of Apex, just three miles from the Raleigh North Carolina Temple, Church members returned for the third straight year to preserve a 133-year-old abandoned African American cemetery now threatened on three sides by developers. Volunteers used chain saws to slice into moveable sections a 30-foot long, 3-foot diameter tree downed by high winds across a corner of the cemetery.
Groups of Church volunteers also mapped grave sites and recorded tombstone inscriptions in six private cemeteries identified by the North Carolina State Archives Tombstone Project as being in "critical" need.
