Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf has been called by the First Presidency as a member of presidency of the Seventy. He will succeed Elder Ben B. Banks.
The changes will take place Aug. 15, at the same time the new area presidency assignments become effective. (Please see pages 8-9.)
Elder Uchtdorf, who will join the quorum presidency at age 61, has served as a member of the Seventy since 1994.
Continuing in the presidency will be Elder Earl C. Tingey, senior president, and Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Elder David E. Sorensen, Elder Dennis B. Neuenschwander, Elder Charles Didier and Elder Cecil O. Samuelson.
Before his call to the Second Quorum of the Seventy, Elder Uchtdorf was a pilot and administrator, the senior vice president of flight operations and chief pilot for Lufthansa German Airlines. He was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1996 and has served as president of several areas, most recently the North America West Area. He also served as assistant executive director of the Correlation Department.
A former stake president, he lived most of his life in Germany; he was born in Czechoslovakia. He and his wife, Harriet Reich Uchtdorf, are parents of two children.
Elder Banks has served in the presidency of the Seventy since 1999. He was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy June 6, 1992, after serving in the Second Quorum since April 1, 1989. He has been serving as executive director of the Correlation Department at Church headquarters.
