Speaking at the 130th annual celebration of the arrival of the first Pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley, Elder L. Tom Perry focused his "sunrise service" remarks on President Brigham Young, according to the July 30, 1977, Church News. The celebration in Salt Lake City took place that year on Monday, July 25, with the early-morning service held in the Salt Palace near Temple Square.

Speaking of President Young, as reported in the Church News, Elder Perry pointed out three leadership qualities possessed by the Church's second president and commented on each.

First was faith: "He lived the principles he believed in. His honesty could be relied on. His morality did not change with the times."

Second was courage: "Certainly you cannot imagine him standing by and letting the problems of energy, drought, divorce, dishonesty, corruption, pollution and crime go unchallenged without meeting them head on with enthusiasm."

Third was industry: "He had a burning desire to make his people more productive. He was continually reaching out to find new industry to bring into the state to make it self-sufficient and give to everyone the opportunity to be productive."
