KAMEZ, Albania A call for emergency assistance in Kamez, Albania, often required long waits. And when assistance finally arrived, it often came in the form of a station wagon with a mattress in the back.
As humanitarian missionaries, it seemed to Elder Le Grand Woolley and Sister Gwen Woolley that a city of 120,000 would greatly benefit from the quality of medical care an ambulance would provide if it could be obtained for the use by the Kamez clinic.
R. Brent Kinghorn of the Albanian Tirana Mission, began with the Humanitarian Services in the Europe Central Area and Salt Lake City headquarters. The Church responded with a fully reconditioned ambulance outfitted with emergency equipment that would be shipped to Albania.
Upon its arrival, the mayor of Kamez, Fran Gjini, expressed his gratitude for the ambulance and congratulated the Church on its interest in the Albanian people and its generous humanitarian efforts.
As President Kinghorn said at the time of the presentation of the ambulance, "It is the intent of the Church to be of assistance to as many needy groups as possible in keeping with the teachings of our Savior, Jesus Christ."
