As one of a number of community events commemorating the tragedy and heroism of 9/11, the First Presidency will hold a devotional service featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to mark Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, as a day of remembrance. The service in the Tabernacle on Temple Square will begin at noon. The public is invited.
Reflecting on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, President Gordon B. Hinckley acknowledged the sober mood and anxiety many people have felt over the past year when he said, "Occasions of this kind pull us up sharply to a realization that life is fragile, peace is fragile, civilization itself is fragile."
In a reaffirmation of civility, faith and freedom, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will perform sacred and patriotic musical selections. President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, will preside over and conduct the service and President James E. Faust, second counselor, will offer a message of solace, remembrance and encouragement. President Hinckley will be traveling in Europe.
Doors of the Tabernacle will open at 11 a.m. Tickets are not required for admittance. The program is expected to last less than an hour.
A live broadcast of the Church's program can be viewed at 12 noon MDT on KBYU-TV, Channel 11 in Utah and on BYU Television, a service provided on the DISH Network and Direct TV. It can also be heard over KBYU-FM and on BYU Radio, on audio on the DISH Network or on line at byuradio.org.
