Lauding its members as "masters of the first rank, bringing dignity to our state," Utah Gov. Michael Leavitt designated the Mormon Tabernacle Choir " a Utah treasure." Craig Jessop, the choir's music director, accepted from the governor a medal on behalf of the organization after the choir performed in the Utah capitol rotunda Wednesday evening, Sept. 25. Accompanied by the Orchestra at Temple Square, the choir performed a program featuring a variety of selections, including patriotic anthems, folk music, hymns and show tunes. The award was presented as part of the Governor's Mansion Artist Series.
