We can make sacrifices through paying an honest tithe, fasting, completing family history and temple work and submitting our will to the Lord.
"Latter-day Saints make a covenant with the Lord to sacrifice. By doing so, we surrender our will to His, dedicating our lives to building up his kingdom and serving his children."
The sacrifice of tithing blesses families, individuals and helps the church to provide resources that build up the kingdom of the Lord. Fasting and contributing a generous offering refines the soul and assists those in need. Temple and family history work is doing something for others they cannot do for themselves.
Joseph Smith has provided us with an example of sacrificing for the church and the Lord as he was arrested, suffered in jail and murdered.
"Though the Prophet Joseph suffered greatly, he remained optimistic and overcame many persecutions."
The Savior is the ultimate example of sacrifice.
"There can be no sacrifice greater than the atoning sacrifice of the Savior Jesus Christ. His atonement, though incomprehensible and without equal, was this world's crowning event."
As Elder Neal A. Maxwell has said, the submission of our will is "really the only uniquely personal thing we have to place on God's altar."
"If we are caring, if we are charitable, if we are obedient to God and follow His prophets, our sacrifices will bring forth the blessings of heaven."
