HONG KONG — The 2,000 players on 375 teams participating in the seventh annual LDS Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament in Hong Kong enjoyed a visit by a prominent coach this year. BYU head basketball coach Steve Cleveland spoke at the opening ceremonies of the event — among the largest in all of Asia — in the Hong Kong Kowloon East Stake Center. Brother Cleveland, who was accompanied by his wife, Kip, talked about his coaching experiences during the past 25 years and the important lessons of life he has learned from basketball. He told the players that the same qualities that bring success in basketball — such as discipline, work ethic, sportsmanship and respect — can lead to happy, successful lives.

Prior to the tournament opening, Brother Cleveland conducted a clinic teaching basketball skills to the boys and girls ages 10-18. Only about 5 percent of the players are members of the Church, which sponsors the tournament for the community.

Brother Cleveland and his wife also participated in two firesides while in Hong Kong. His tour was in response to an invitation from the Asia Area presidency.
