NAUVOO, Ill. After singing Christmas carols in neighboring communities of Keokuk, Iowa, and Carthage, Ill., the Illinois Nauvoo Missionary Choir, led by Sister Joanne McKenna of Logan, Utah, sang on the steps of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple Dec. 24.
"What a sight against the white limestone, beautifully lighted temple," said one observer. "Standing on the steps looking out towards the Mississippi River, singing carols of the first Christmas in the City of Joseph.
"Music breaks down all barriers and brings about some commonality, which is so beneficial as we seek to interest others in coming to this little town on the bend of the river."
Earlier, the 90-voice choir performed at the Christmas parade in Keokuk, in the open-air carriage drawn by one of the Nauvoo teams the big draft horses "Ben & Bill," who by the way had red hats on their heads, red scarves around their necks and bells attached to their harnesses.
In Carthage, the choir caroled in and about the shops around the town square for the Carthage Christmas open house. The choir also sang in Keosauqua, Iowa, at a community festival of trees exhibition.
The choir also sang in Nauvoo at the end of old Main Street between the Homestead and the Nauvoo House as the guests went from one historic site to another.
