Responding to surging growth worldwide, the First Presidency announced that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold its first global leadership training by satellite on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003.

The three-hour meeting will be for priesthood leaders including stake presidents and bishops, and the many priesthood officers who support them such as high councilors and elders quorum presidents. President Gordon B. Hinckley and members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will conduct the training.

Some 97 percent of targeted Church leaders will be reached by the transmission. Only a swatch of land in western Africa is outside the satellite footprint. Leaders in that area will receive the three-hour training by videotape later.

The First Presidency noted that the decision to use a satellite broadcast to train priesthood leaders is a major step for the Church.

"The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve will continue to travel to units throughout the world. Such interaction with Church members is essential for the leadership to stay in touch with members," the First Presidency indicated.
