Priesthood leaders gather for satellite broadcast

Priesthood leaders around the world gathered in their stake centers and meetinghouses Jan. 11 to receive instruction from Church leaders in the first global leadership training by satellite broadcast.
"What a remarkable thing this is," President Gordon B. Hinckley said of the technology that made possible the 2 1/2-hour broadcast.
In attendance at the broadcast's point of origin in the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City were President Hinckley and his counselors in the First Presidency, President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor, and President James E. Faust, second counselor; and all members of the Quorum of the Twelve, except Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, who have assignments in the Philippines and Chile, respectively.
In conducting the meeting, President Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, explained the broadcast's purpose: "We have called you together to counsel you on how to be better stake, ward, mission, and quorum leaders and how to be faithful husbands and worthy fathers."
Speakers included President Hinckley, President Packer, and Elders L. Tom Perry, Neal A. Maxwell, M. Russell Ballard and Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve.
Proceedings of the broadcast were transmitted in 56 languages to priesthood leaders located \in some 97 percent of the world. Only a portion of western Africa was outside the satellite footprint. Leaders there will receive video copies.
Never in the history of the Church have so many priesthood leaders in diverse locations been instructed in their own language by so many of the Church's ranking leaders. A second global training transmission is scheduled in June.
Church leaders will continue to travel throughout the world to meet members in their countries.
