A powerful earthquake in western Mexico Jan. 21 claimed the lives of more than 20 people, damaged dozens of homes and buildings and left thousands homeless.

There were no reports of death or serious injuries to full-time missionaries or members, although four Church member homes in Colima were destroyed, said Mexico Guadalajara Mission President Wilford W. Andersen. The quake also brought down a Colima home where a pair of full-time missionaries were living. Fortunately, the missionaries were out at the time, President Andersen said.

At press time, Church leaders were assessing the severity of property damage to Colima-area meetinghouses.

The magnitude 7.8 temblor was centered in the tourist center of Manzanillo on the Pacific Coast, according to the Associated Press. The west coast state of Colima suffered the greatest loss of life and damage.
