Just as the sun provides warmth and light for all the world, the Light of Christ and the influence and gift of the Holy Ghost can help all mankind to distinguish between good and evil and learn gospel truths.
The Light of Christ is not a personage, but an influence that prepares men to receive the Holy Ghost. "The gift of the Holy Ghost, which is the right to receive the Holy Ghost as a constant companion, is obtained only upon condition of faith in Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion and the laying on of hands by authorized servants endowed with the Melchizedek Priesthood."
The gift must be received and accepted to be enjoyed. Those who are confirmed receive the right to the companionship of the Holy Ghost, but "it is a right that we must continue to earn through obedience and worthiness."
Many church members do not rise to the privileges inherent in the gift of the Holy Ghost. "If we are not careful, the things of this world can crowd out the things of the Spirit." Sin and complacency can negate the gift.
"I invite you to ponder in a humble and prayerful manner: 'Do I have the Spirit in my life? Am I happy? Am I doing anything in my life that is offensive to the Spirit and preventing the Holy Ghost from being my constant companion?' Have the courage to repent if needed." Those still seeking truth can "give place in your hearts to this heavenly light" by developing faith, repenting and seeking baptism.
