Nancy Vorheis tuned in to the Sunday morning session of the 173rd Annual General Conference and soon felt a peace she "hadn't felt in three months."
Like scores of other families in the Church, the Vorheis family is a unit temporarily divided. Sister Vorheis' husband, William, is a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country somewhere in Iraq. Besides his military duties, Brother Vorheis performs a spiritual function, serving as a lay leader to a group of fellow LDS Marines.
A mother of six, Sister Vorheis said she's grateful for the spiritual boost she received listening to her own spiritual leaders over conference weekend. It's no surprise President Gordon B. Hinckley's Sunday morning talk about war and peace was especially helpful.
"I felt a sense of comfort [knowing] that the prophet himself was praying for these troops," said Sister Vorheis of the Twenty Nine Palms 1st Ward, Yucca Valley California Stake.
She appreciated President Hinckley's admonition to Church members worldwide to offer their own prayers for the many men and women in uniform who might find themselves in harm's way.
In his address, President Hinckley spoke of the Book of Mormon battle recorded in Alma in which the Nephites fought to defend their liberties, their families and their right to worship. Sister Vorheis said her family had recently read those same chapters in their own scripture study and found peace in those ancient, yet ever-so-timely writings.
Sister Vorheis said she was uplifted by the many talks delivered by the General Authorities and Church auxiliary leaders. "This conference seemed geared so much to families," she said. She plans to share her enthusiasm with her deployed husband, sending an authorized tape of the conference to a distant land.
