"The first temple to be built outside Utah after the saints came West the Hawaii Temple was rededicated [in Laie] June 13 by President Spencer W. Kimball," the June 24, 1978, Church News reported.
About 700 invited Church leaders and their wives attended the first rededication session in the temple, the article stated, and other members of the 10 stakes in Hawaii attended eight sessions held in the auditorium on the BYU-Hawaii campus June 13-15.
President Kimball, who spoke in all nine sessions, was accompanied by his counselors, President N. Eldon Tanner and President Marion G. Romney, and by three members of the Quorum of the Twelve, President Ezra Taft Benson, Elder Howard W. Hunter and Elder Marvin J. Ashton.
The temple was originally dedicated in 1919 by President Heber J. Grant. It was rededicated after extensive remodeling.
Also during the trip, President Kimball presided over the first area conference in the United States, a Church News article reported in the same issue. It was held in Honolulu on June 18.
The article stated, "The first session of the conference, which drew 8,290 persons, was televised live by a Honolulu TV station."
President Kimball's trip, which lasted eight days, included several other events.
