PRESTON, Idaho — An LDS school built here in the late 1800s has been saved from the wrecking ball. The Oneida Stake Academy, which educated Church Presidents Ezra Taft Benson and Harold B. Lee, was going to be demolished to expand the adjacent Preston High School. Instead, it will be moved three blocks to Benson Park, due to efforts of the Friends of the Academy, a group of local residents and people interested in historic buildings owned by the Church.
The organization received the needed last donation June 26; on June 19, the Preston School District Board of Trustees accepted a bid from a demolition company and was planning to raze the building.
