KIRKLAND, Wash. — Cassie Merkley of the Leavenworth Branch, Wenatchee Washington Stake, took first in the Washington State Heptathlon last month here with a point total of 4,602. It was the first year competing in the event for the Cascade High School sophomore who beat several seniors from throughout the state. Cassie, Mia Maid president, won the title during the Dennis McDonald Washington high school decathlon/heptathlon championships the first weekend of June.

The previous week, Cassie won the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the javelin throw during the state 2A championships, leading her team to the state title.
