Wherefore, we would to God that we could persuade all men not to rebel against God, to provoke him to anger, but that all men would believe in Christ, and view his death, and suffer his cross and bear the shame of the world. . . .

— Jacob 1:8

One morning, while on my mission, I came across Jacob 1:8 in my personal scripture study. It struck me to the heart, and I felt a strong desire to understand more about the atonement of Jesus Christ and what He suffered for us. Had I suffered His cross?

That evening, our appointment ran a little later than we expected and we had only 10 minutes to make it home on time. As I jumped on my bike to ride off I noticed something was wrong. My back tire was wedged sideways and would not turn! I wanted to be as obedient as possible, so I lifted the bike onto my shoulders and started running alongside my companion.

As the weight pressed down on my shoulders I remembered the scripture I had read that morning. I imagined again what the Savior did for all of us. It became clearer to me and I felt a deep gratitude for the Atonement.

After a long run home, I knelt my aching body and poured my heart out.
