A missionary era ended in Salt Lake City with the closing of the missionary home, replaced by a facility in Provo, Utah, in late October 1978.
"The last missionaries to be trained in the Salt Lake Missionary Home packed their bags Oct. 26 and left for the mission field," stated an article in the Oct. 28, 1978, Church News. The remodeled school building which housed the missionaries will now be used for other purposes."
The article continued: "In recent history, Salt Lake missionary homes have been located north of the Beehive House on State Street and north of the Salt Lake Temple on Main Street.
"Beginning Monday, Oct. 30, missionaries who would have been assigned to the Salt Lake Missionary Home will report for four weeks of training at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, at the facility formerly known as the Language Training Mission."
At the time, there were other missionary training centers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Temple View, New Zealand.
The article reported that in just the final three years of its use, 34,000 missionaries went through the Salt Lake Missionary Home.
