The Church has sent a shipment of medicine and pharmaceutical supplies to Bam, Iran, to help care for survivors of a devastating, deadly earthquake.
The 6.6-magnitude Dec. 26 quake reportedly killed some 28,000 people. Thousands of others were injured or left homeless.
The Church made contact with Iranian officials and learned there were critical needs for emergency medicine to treat the injured, said Church Welfare Services spokesman Garry R. Flake, director of Humanitarian Services and LDS Charities.
A Church-purchased shipment of antibiotics, topical skin medications, allergy medicine and pharmaceutical supplies was expected to arrive in Iran on Jan. 2 or 3. The shipment will be large enough to treat between 90,000 to 100,000 people, Brother Flake said.
The medical provisions were purchased with money from the Church's humanitarian fund. Danesh Yazdi, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, expressed appreciation for the generosity of Church members.
