LAIE, Hawaii Youth of the Laie 2nd Ward, Laie Hawaii Stake, recently spent an evening collecting food donations for Samoan victims of tropical cyclone Heta, which struck several Pacific islands Jan. 5-6. The group, including 22 youth and 11 leaders, went door-to-door and collected three truckloads of supplies Jan. 22 for victims on Samoa's island of Upolu, one of three islands hit by the storm, which had hurricane-force winds gusting to 120 miles per hour. (Please see Jan. 17, 2004, Church News.)
The youth delivered the food to the Hauula Fire Station, a designated collection area for storm victim relief supplies. The fire captain was surprised by the size of the donation. "Folks in the area had been dropping off donations, but not like this," he said. "This is awesome."
