The words of Christ can be a personal Liahona for each, said Elder W. Rolfe Kerr of the Seventy.
"Let us not be slothful because of the easiness of the way. Let us in faith take the words of Christ into our minds and into our hearts as they are recorded in sacred scripture and as they are uttered by living prophets, seers and revelators. Let us with faith and diligence feast upon the words of Christ, for the words of Christ will be our spiritual Liahona telling us all things what we should do."
Speaking during the Saturday afternoon session, Elder Kerr affirmed his testimony of the First Presidency and Quorum of Twelve Apostles as "special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world," and then declared his testimony of the Book of Mormon as scripture.
"It, too, is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righteousness. . . .
"We fervently declare that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, translated from ancient records by the gift and power of God," he said, joining his testimony with the testimonies of members around the world.
"It contains the prophetic writings and revelations given to these people," Elder Kerr said.
He recounted the life of Christ as told in the Book of Mormon, culminating in the Savior's appearance to the Nephites as recorded in Third Nephi.
"We are blessed to have within the pages of the Book of Mormon His words, even the very words of Christ, as spoken to that ancient civilization," he said.
"When Lehi and his family were commanded to leave Jerusalem, they were given a sacred instrument which worked as a compass for them, showing them the course that they should travel. We read that it worked only according to their faith in God."
Citing Alma's counsel to his son Helaman, Elder Kerr said, "I would that ye should understand that these things are not without a shadow; for as our fathers were slothful to give heed to this compass they did not prosper; even so it is with things which are spiritual. For behold, it is as easy to give heed to the word of Christ, which will point to you a straight course to eternal bliss, as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass, which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land."
