The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square will perform a special gala concert commemorating the 75th Anniversary of its weekly radio and TV broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word," Saturday, July 17, in the Conference Center at 7:30 p.m.
The actual anniversary broadcast of the program will take place Sunday, July 18, in the Conference Center at the usual time, 9:30 a.m., and will be the 3.909th broadcast of this, the longest continuous weekly network radio program in the world.
The concert and broadcast are being held in lieu of a Pioneer Day Commemoration, which was to have been carried over the Church satellite system on Sunday July 18, but which has now been canceled. The concert will not be carried over the satellite system, but will be broadcast later on KBYU-TV, Channel 11; and on the cable station BYU Television.
Charles Osgood, acclaimed CBS News correspondent, will be the featured guest for this special concert, which will also include several historical multi-media interludes.
Both the gala concert and the anniversary broadcast will feature Mr. Osgood and are ticketed events. Tickets will be available at the Conference Center Ticket Office (inside door 4) or by logging onto www.lds.org/events starting Tuesday June 8, at 10 a.m. MDT.
As part of the festivities, the choir is eager to identify the oldest living former choir member and, in particular, any living choir members who might have sung on the original 1929 broadcast. Call the choir office at (801) 240-4150 (information only; see above for tickets).
