President David O. McKay spoke to 16,000 people in the Hollywood Bowl as part of the Southern California MIA Conference the first week of August, 1954, according to the Aug. 14, 1954, Church News.
The conference included drama, dance and musical presentations which attracted thousands of spectators. It was organized by general Church leaders in conjunction with leaders of the 16 participating stakes in Southern California. Also part of the conference was a speech session with the theme "Temple Marriage." President McKay also spoke at that session.
The article stated: "President Mc-Kay, referring to the great Los Angeles Temple now under construction, remarked on the fitness of the theme. 'This program,' he said, 'emphasizes the need of taking temples to people of other lands for they, too, love their own and want them in the eternities to come.' "
In the outdoor meeting at the Hollywood Bowl, President McKay expressed his love for the youth of the Church. The article quoted him: "I have confidence in them. Most of them desire to do right in life and do their best. . . . The Church with all its opportunities is leading youth to have faith in God; leading them to chastity and love and morality. These are guides to happiness."
Other Church leaders who spoke at the conference included Elder
LeGrand Richards and Elder Richard L. Evans of the Quorum of the Twelve.
