The Church's Welfare Services department released the following statement Aug. 2, detailing Latter-day Saint efforts to help Sudanese refugees who have fled civil unrest to the African nation of Chad:
"The decades-old civil unrest in Sudan continues to affect the lives of millions of people. Humanitarian disaster response agencies in the region report that more than 30,000 have died and over a million people have been forced from their homes by rebel forces and are living in desperate conditions facing serious shortages of water and food.
"A donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is providing clean water and improved sanitation in refugee camps where more than 200,000 Sudanese refugees have fled in the neighboring country of Chad.
"In addition, the shipment of five 40-foot containers of food and supplies containing Atmit (a nutritionally enriched supplement for children and the elderly), hygiene kits, and first aid and medical supplies to the refugee camps is in progress. The situation is being closely monitored for addressing additional needs."
