President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, celebrated his 77th birthday on Aug. 21. He celebrated with a special party attended by almost all of his extended family. Only one grandson, currently out of state, was absent.

President Monson was born on Aug. 21, 1927, in Salt Lake City to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson. He married Frances Beverly Johnson on Oct. 7, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple. They are parents of two sons and one daughter. On Oct. 4, 1963, he was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve. He has served in the First Presidency as counselor to three Church presidents.
